Best ways to protect hair color!
Whether it’s a deep conditioning treatment, a treatment oil for hair or perhaps a protective hair serum, customers want to know how to extend and protect the life of their hair color.
Each year salon individual salon clients spent hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on hair color. From base color applications to partial highlights, balayage services to dimensional applications, the sky is the limit with hair color services and results. So what are the very best ways to protect hair color services both immediately following the application and 3, 4, or 5 weeks down the line when color often seems to fade.
GIVE IT A BREAK! Upon completing your hair color application, most salon professionals agree to wait 24-48 hours before you shampoo and condition your hair at home. This gives hair, hair color and overall hair results time to “settle” and relax. We’ve heard it said that the cuticle “needs time to rebond” or to heal itself (so to speak) after the color application, shampooing and conditioning and thermal styling associated with the color process. All of these things really take a toll on hair and are anything but “the norm” with day-to-day processes. We definitely give TWO THUMBS UP when it comes to giving hair a break.
IF YOU SWIM! Safeguard your hair against chlorine or salt water from the ocean and certainly use protective ingredients on your hair if you’re out in the sun. Hydrating properties like aloe, green tea, or silk amino acids help hydrate hair and protect against environmental damage. Avoid letting chlorine water or ocean water dry in your hair. We suggest wetting hair before you swim, and spritz with Gloss & Toss Prep and apply a little of our Shine serum to super coat strands of hair. Additionally, if you have longer hair, BRAID YOUR HAIR BEFORE YOU SWIM. This keeps strands of hair together as a unit rather than their all being affected “loosely” by chlorine, sun or ocean water. And of course, wear a swim cap if you can before swimming.
DON’T DO IT YOURSELF! There’s nothing worse than trying your own “box color job” at home with a friend or two, having it go wrong, then you race back to the store for anything that might fix it. Yikes. This is more trouble than what it’s worth. We always suggest having it done the right way to begin with, save the extra stress on your hair (and yourself) as well as the huge fees it might cost for color correction on the back end.
KNOW YOUR WATER! Many people live in harsh water areas and may need to add water filters or softeners to their overall water systems or showers at least for softer skin and hair. Check with your salon professional or perhaps your local retail outlets about water conditions or filters that might be available. Many systems are available for softening your water if you do have concerns about harsh water.
