How to make fresh and delicious watermelon salad!
Many people remember spring and summer dishes and some of their favorite fruits being in season like plums, mulberries, peaches and whatever else grew in the garden (or down the road). Spring and summer salads are the perfect bring along whether it’s a picnic, family event, meal planning, a church or holiday event, you name it. Many people definitely remember watermelon salads during their childhood and we at Gloss & Toss wanted to bring you a great recipe that has been through so many reincarnations over time but we love it and hope you do as well.
Living in Los Angeles much of our influence is from what happens around us more than things being “passed down” it seems. In larger cities things change so quickly it hardly feels like you’re making or leaving traditions but we’ve gathered a few things here and there for this delicious watermelon salad and we hope you love the blends.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- Watermelon (we prefer to cut our own)
- Lime (we grabbed this inspiration from some of the fruit stands around Los Angeles)
- 3-4 lime
- Diced Onions (red are fine)
- Diced apples (some people don’t like this but it adds a little zing/tart flavor
- Black olives
- Pine nuts (if you like them)
- Crumbled Feta
In a small mixing bowl – place the diced onions and squeeze 3 limes over them and allow to sit for an hour or two. This will help take the sharpness out of the onion.
In a large mixing bowl – include your watermelon (cubed), cilantro, black olives (slide or diced), diced apples, and when the onions/lime (above) are ready, pour those in as well.
FINGER MIX. YES – HAVE FUN. If you use spoons you may break the watermelon cubes. Just use your hand (wash first obviously).
Top this beautiful mixture off with crumbled feta and pine nuts and you’re good to go. It’s such a refreshing salad great for almost any event or outing.
